Program Overview

Program Background

The Master of Science in Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology is a unique program that has been designed in association with a panel of leading experts from the sport, health & fitness industries. With an industry focus, this program is highly practical and applied, teaching many skills and tools for success in addition to covering the key theoretical components. This program is designed for practitioners first and foremost, with routes to progress in academia facilitated also.

It is the first program that has been designed to serve 2 different student streams across multiple international locations. Students from a psychological background enter the program with ‘graduate basis for chartered membership’ (GBC) from their professional society accredited bachelor’s program. The program has been designed to meet the requirements of the main professional societies to continue that GBC pathway at grad-school level. Students coming from a sport science or S&C background will benefit from the structures put in place by the professional psychological societies but also gain exposure to the requirements of the more applied non-psychological industry societies.

This program has been developed to facilitate the learning of working professionals as well as recent graduates who wish to gain experience while they study. Delivered in a flexible fashion over 18-24 months with weekly lectures delivered online and fitting flexibly into your current life commitments, the practical and applied nature of this program includes a number of very exciting and engaging face-to-face workshops twice during your period of study. Led by World-leading practitioners, this program offers students the opportunity to learn from those who are active in the work environment alongside their research and teaching.

Courses covered:

  1. Research Methods
  2. Reflective Sport & Exercise Psychology in Practice
  3. Cognition, Perception & Neuropsychology
  4. Psychological Skills Training & Interventions
  5. Social Psychology – Interpersonal & Group Processes
  6. Enhancing Health & Wellbeing
  7. Applied Project

Course Duration

The program duration is 84 weeks. This includes:

  • 6 online courses (each course is 12 weeks in duration)
  • On-site residential weeks, practical application, and lectures.
  • Final Project (additional 3 months to complete)

2024 Residential Information

Much of the learning on each course will occur through a mix of online courses and experiential learning, however, a key part of the program will be the residentials. While the content of each residential block will be dependent upon the courses undertaken, the overarching objectives will be similar.

The campus location for the program is the Memorial Hermann Sports Park, 23910 Katy Fwy, Katy, TX 77494, United States.

The objectives:

  • To provide hands-on instruction and experience in the practical elements of the course content. Even though the program is focused mainly on an evidence-based practice approach, practical competency in the application of theory to practice and in the ‘art’ and ‘craft’ of coaching will be emphasized. Further, the competence in the use of and interpretation of data using a wide range of coaching technologies and the coaching process will be central to the face to face environment and thus the residential will ensure that practitioners receive high-class instruction in the key practical elements required for effective industry practice.
  • To allow for practical assessments and presentation-based assessments to be carried out.
  • To provide contextualization and critical discussion of the topics covered in the online material. This will essentially be a flipped-classroom approach to teaching. This medium will allow practitioners to share experiences and provide a highly interactive learning environment.
